Physics word problem help please!?

The melting point of gold is 1064°C. Express this temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and kelvins.

Physics word problem help please!?
To convert from Centigrade to Fahrenheit, use the formula

F = (9/5)*C + 32

So, to convert 1064 C,

F = (9/5)*1064 + 32

= 1947.2 F

To convert Centigrade to Kelvin, the formula is

K = 273 + C

so 1064 C in the Kelvin scale is

K = 273 + 1064 = 1337

Or perhaps you are just remembering the good times you two had instead of the bad? He is your ex for a reason you know. You had your turn and he moved on it looks like. Do you try to break them up, no because how will you look? It's too late to express your feelings because you will just look desperate, so none of the above. You have to try and shake him out of your head and start to heal from this. There is someone else out there for you.

Professional florists realize the primary motivation for the purchase of flowers is to?

A. spend money

B. beautify commercial environments

C. express emotion

D. meet other people

Professional florists realize the primary motivation for the purchase of flowers is to?
It has to be C, though, I would have said B, except that I purchase flowers to beautify my personal environment.
Reply:I think that the primary motivation for the purchase of flowers is a combination of expressing emotion and following cultural customs. The primary times people buy flowers is on holidays (i.e. Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Memorial Day), for events (prom, weddings, funerals) and for the emotional payoff (on a date, a plea for forgiveness, or "just because").
Reply:I'll go with B and C and to achieve this, some people dont care much about A and florists know this (besides, plants and flowers are $$ to cultivate and preserve)

UCC Article 2?

Just Wondering if anyone can Help me with this Business Law question? I don’t even understand it!

With regard to the interpretation of a contract that falls within Article 2 of the UCC, what priority is given to each of the following items?

A) Course of Dealing

B) Usage of Trade

C) Express Terms

D) Course of performance

UCC Article 2?
§ 1-303. Course of Performance, Course of Dealing, and Usage of Trade.

(a) A "course of performance" is a sequence of conduct between the parties to a particular transaction that exists if: (1) the agreement of the parties with respect to the transaction involves repeated occasions for performance by a party; and (2) the other party, with knowledge of the nature of the performance and opportunity for objection to it, accepts the performance or acquiesces in it without objection.

(b) A "course of dealing" is a sequence of conduct concerning previous transactions between the parties to a particular transaction that is fairly to be regarded as establishing a common basis of understanding for interpreting their expressions and other conduct.

(c) A "usage of trade" is any practice or method of dealing having such regularity of observance in a place, vocation, or trade as to justify an expectation that it will be observed with respect to the transaction in question. The existence and scope of such a usage must be proved as facts. If it is established that such a usage is embodied in a trade code or similar record, the interpretation of the record is a question of law.

(d) A course of performance or course of dealing between the parties or usage of trade in the vocation or trade in which they are engaged or of which they are or should be aware is relevant in ascertaining the meaning of the parties' agreement, may give particular meaning to specific terms of the agreement, and may supplement or qualify the terms of the agreement. A usage of trade applicable in the place in which part of the performance under the agreement is to occur may be so utilized as to that part of the performance.

(e) Except as otherwise provided in subsection (f), the express terms of an agreement and any applicable course of performance, course of dealing, or usage of trade must be construed whenever reasonable as consistent with each other. If such a construction is unreasonable: (1) express terms prevail over course of performance, course of dealing, and usage of trade; (2) course of performance prevails over course of dealing and usage of trade; and (3) course of dealing prevails over usage of trade.

(f) Subject to Section 2-209, a course of performance is relevant to show a waiver or modification of any term inconsistent with the course of performance.

(g) Evidence of a relevant usage of trade offered by one party is not admissible unless that party has given the other party notice that the court finds sufficient to prevent unfair surprise to the other party.

Chem 10 question do you know the answer?

The specific heat capacity of silver is 0.24 J/g/°C. Express this in terms of kilocalories per gram per Celsius degree.

kcal/g/°C

Chem 10 question do you know the answer?
1 calorie is approximately equal to 4,184 Joules (from now on calorie=cal and Joule=J), so:

0.24 J/g/ºC x 1 cal / 4,184 J = 0.057 cal/g/ºC =57 kcal/g/ºC

1 cal and 4,184 J are equivalent, so you can multiply any result this way (by the appropiate factor) to change the units.

Another examples could be (all are equivalent):

1 atmosphere = 101325 Pascal

1 Newton = 1 Kg/m s^2

1 electronvolt = 1,6x10^-19 Joules

and so on ... see the link below for more conversion factors.

This is the maths section, next time try in the Chemistry or Physics one :)
Reply:4.184 J= 1 cal

specific heat capacity of silver= 0.24 J/4.184 cal /g/C

= 0.05736 cal/g/C

Making .gifs?

I want to use c++ or java to make 1000s of gifs. I can use the file I/O feature, and just put it in a loop. I can do it with .html, but I don't know how to do it with .gifs, .bmps, or .jpegs. I use Visual C++ express (which doesn't have a lot to work with) so if I need to use any header files, please let me know where I can find them. Thanks ahead!

Making .gifs?
Unlike .html files which are text files, .gifs, .bmps, and .jpgs are binary files. Each has their own specific binary format and can be pretty complicated. You can try and write directly to the file using the file specifications of them, for example the gif file specification is available here (http://www.martinreddy.net/gfx/2d/GIF87a... or you can use a premade software library that simplifes the process for you like this one (http://www.libgd.org/Main_Page)

Business Law?

Sam enters into a written contract to lease an apartment from Mr.%26amp;Mrs. Simon. The parties signed a printed form leases which says that no pets are allowed. On the lease, there is a handwritten sentence, initialed by all parties, that Sam is allowed to keep his seeing eye dog in the apartment. The Simons attempt to evict Sam because he keeps his dog in his apartment. The Court will rule that

A. Is it the handwritten statement that Sam can have a pet will prevail over form and Sam win

B. the printed words of the form will prevail and Sam will be evicted

C. the lease violates he Statute of Frauds

Tom purchases an IBM from Jonh, a thief, for $550. Later, Tom reconditions the typewritten and sells it to Larry for $750. When the original owner tracks down the stolen typewritten, Larry sues Tom under the theory of

a. warranty of title

b. warranty of merchantability

c. express warranty

d. warranty against infringement

Business Law?
On the lease agreement, it would fall under A: that the handwritten statement has been signed by both, but I also believe that Sam also has a valid claim arising from ADA ( American Disabilities Act) allowing him to keep a seeing eye dog when this was mentioned prior to the rental.

On the IBM issue, it is also A; Warrenty of title. The legal and criminal charge would be Receiving Stolen Property. It would be the responsibility of each buyer to run the serial numbers to check for theft reports. It would then fall back on Tom for failing to do so.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful
Reply:Both are A. Becuase there are conflicting provisions in the lease the court will look to the intent of the parties. Since the provision is written in, it will likely prevail as being the intent of the parties. The lease doesn't violate the statute of frauds because it is in writing.

If I want to give Computer Game Programming a go what should I Use?

I want to try computer game programming but dont know which language to choose I know C++ is used a lot but I use this very little. I use Visual Basic.Net a lot but I dont know if this is the right choice. Ive just downloaded Microsoft C# Express Edition and XNA Studio 1.0 and wonder if these are the right choose?

Any help will be appreciated

If I want to give Computer Game Programming a go what should I Use?
you can do it in any language. For great sample codes, check out http://www.pscode.com
Reply:I used XNA / C# for awhile, but that platform needs to come along with at least a small GUI wrapper, and a real sound engine (not this XACT crap). Now I use MDX 1.0 and C#, and it's pretty good for games. You won't be able to develop a game that needs something like C++ for performance by yourself (no offense, it just takes a lot of work).
Reply:couldn't tell much from your post, but all commercial high quality games are written in c++
Reply:if you ask me id say c++ is the best for highquality stuff. but if you really dont want that maybe you should just try flash...at least as a starter flash is pretty simple comparitivly speaking....
Reply:The best language to use for programming is totally dependant on what type of game you are creating and for what platform.

Website mini games, for example Stick RPG(www.stickrpg.com), would be best created in flash.

A console game, like Final Fantasy(PSX/PS2), would be best coded in C++

A mobile game such as, Quadra Pop (Sony W800i), would be best coded in Java.

Each language has its own plus and negative points. All are very difficult to pick up and use without guidance.

A beginner in this field might want to try RPG Maker, this program requires no knowledge of programming but does give the user a feel for games development. If the user enjoyed this they may wish to learn more about programming.
Reply:Programming a video game is not a good place to start for a beginner. Learn C++ first.

C# and Java are semi-compiled languages that use a runtime engine. That will probably make them less practical for a "real" video game. (They're both great languages, though.)

Start with a simpler task, until you get better at programming.
Reply:I don't know what your main goal with game programming is, but you might check out blender and using it's game engine try programming something. There's a small community using it, but it's good software.

blender.org

google some of the example games made with it.
Reply:Pen and paper first to do all your prototyping, storyboaring, character design etc.

Have a look at the references below for tips on games programming. C++ seems to be the dominant language of game development.

Qooting from Ref 2:

"C/C++ is the leading development language of game creation, Visual Basic by Microsoft has some merit, especially for non- action intensive products, and Delphi, a new language for Windows, by Borland shows promise. For beginners I recommend Visual Basic, perhaps Delphi if they know some programming already. For people already familiar with VB or other flavors of Basic or Pascal, go for C/C++ and some Assembly." - Ben Sawyer (author of 'Ultimate Game Developer's Sourcebook')

Hope this helps!
Reply:well a real game takes a few years to produce with a huge team. thats how EA or Blizzard do it. for you , you should start with flash or

there is a program that helps u make small games . it is called Game Maker. google -it
Reply:if you want to make games i recomand you c/c++, i'm not sure if c# is good. but also you can try java and flash
Reply:Before you undertake learning a language i would recommend learning the basics of procedural and event driven programming. Explore the difference between pocedures and functions and also look into object oriented programming as this will give you a good conceptual understanding of how software works
Reply:C++ is the language used for commercial games. You can create simple games in nearly any language.

This has me stumped! its a tad long but please help me?

an electron of mass m is initially moving with a constant speed v, where v%26lt;%26lt;c. express all algebraic answers in terms of the given quantities and fundamental constants. (A) determin the kinetic energy of the electron (B) determine the de broglie wavelength of the electron

The electron encounters a particle with the same mass and opposite charge (a positron) moving with the same speed in the opposite direction. they undergo a head on collision which results in the disappearance of both particles and production of energy

C) determine the energy of each proton

(d) determine the wavelength of each proton

(e) explain why there must be two photons instead of just one

please help me i don't even know where to start!

This has me stumped! its a tad long but please help me?
First part is simple plug %26amp; chug:

kinetic energy = 1/2 mv^2......since v%26lt;%26lt;c this is OK.

deBroglie wavelenth = h/p (h = Planck's constant, p =momentum which is p=mv for v%26lt;%26lt;c.)

Second part is more work. Incoming energy = mass-energy of 2 electrons plus their kinetic energy. Both e's are moving at the same speed. Add all that up.

The two protons that come out have a certain mass-energy and kinetic energy. That must balance the incoming energy of the 2 electrons. You know the mass-energy of a proton, so you know the amount of KE left for them.

Momentum must be conserved. Total momentum before the collision is ZERO (they are same mass, moving in opposite directions). So total momentum after must also be ZERO - and they're the same mass, so each proton must leave in opposite direction with same velocity (but it will be much slower than the electrons' velocity).

The energy of the proton is its mass-energy plus its KE. Actually the total energy of each proton will equal the total energy of each electron.

Now that you know the proton's velocity you can calculate its deBroglie wavelenth.

Why must there be two protons?

1. Conservation of charge - net charge of electron and position is zero, so one proton must be an anti-proton if the other is a proton.

2. Conservation of energy and momentum - if only one proton was created there would certainly be some leftover energy that would have to then be kinetic energy...but if there is only one particle this would violate conservation of momentum. So there must be two esit particles.

3. Conservation of spin - electrons are spin 1/2 and so are protons - the combo of 2 spin 1/2 particles will total either 0 or 1 spin - but the proton coming out is spin 1/2 so there must be another particle coming out with spin 1/2.

Good luck. Be careful with the units.

Chemistry help?

The element silver melts at 960.8 degrees C and boils at 2212 degrees C. Express these temperatures in Kelvin.

Chemistry help?
Degrees on Kelvin and Celsius scales are equal, the only difference is the beginning of the scales. Zero on Celsius scale equals 273.16 kelvin, thus;

960.8 C = 960.8 + 273.16 = 1233.96K

2212 C = 2212 + 273.16 = 2485.16K
Reply:Tm = 960.8 + 273.15 = 1234.0 K

Tb = 2212 + 273.15 = 2485.2 K

The heat of neutralization of HCl (aq) by NaOH (aq) is -55.84 Kj/mol H2O produced.?

The heat of neutralization of HCl (aq) by NaOH (aq) is -55.84 Kj/mol H2O produced.

If 50.00 ml of 1.10 M NaOH is added to 25.00 ml of 1.90 M HCl, with both solutions originally at 24.70 C, what will be the final solution temperature? (Assume that no heat is lost to the surrounding air and that the solution produced in the neutralization reaction has a density of 1.02 g/ml and a specific heat of 3.98 j/g/C.)

Express your answer using four significant figures.

The heat of neutralization of HCl (aq) by NaOH (aq) is -55.84 Kj/mol H2O produced.?
50.00 ml of 1.10 M NaOH contains: 0.05000*1.10 mol = 0.0550 mol of NaOH

25.00 ml of 1.90 M HCl contains: 0.02500*1.90 mol = 0.0475 mol of HCl.

Hence HCl is the limiting reactant, and thus 0.0475 mol of H2O may be formed. The total heat to be released is:

(55.84 Kj/mol)*(0.0475 mol) = 2.65 kJ

Once 50.00 ml of 1.10 M NaOH is added to 25.00 ml of 1.90 M HCl, the total volume is 75.00ml, which is 75.00*1.02 g = 76.5g.

The temperature increase post-mixing is:

∆T = 2.65x10^3/(3.98*76.5) = 8.71K

Therefore the final solution temperature is: 33.41ºC.
Reply:allow me to ask what or where did the constant?? 2.65X10^3 came from? Report It

Questions on Number bases?

hi everyone,

i need help to solve these questions. I found these questions in a book with no answer sheet and I'm kinda new to these kind of questions. please guide me through these questions with calculation steps. thanks.

Given that 10011 (base 2) - P (base 2) = 1101 (base 2)

a) find the value of P,

b) express P as a number in base five,

c) express P as a number in base eight.

Questions on Number bases?
a.) p = 6 (In Decimal ie base 10)

b.) Base 5 p = 11

c.) Base 8 p = 6
Reply:a) 110

You can do it by converting the numbers to base 10:

10011 = 19 and 1101 = 13 so P = 6

I base 2, 6 = 4 + 2

In base 2, 4 = 100 and 2 = 10 so 100 + 10 = 110

You can also do it directly:

from the right hand side, 1 - 1 = 0 so last digit is 0

next one in: 1 - 0 = 1 so second to last digit is 1

next one: 0 - 1 is 1, but have to pay back by ading 1 in next column, so you get 10 - 10 whih is 0

thus answer is 110

b)

In base 10 the number is 6, so in base 5 it is 5^1 + 1 = 11

c) in base 8 the number will be 6 because it is less than 8

A very High Level Math Problem!!!! Please help me out!!!?

An open-top box is to be made so that its width is 4 ft and its volume is 40 ft^3. The base of the box costs $4/ft^2 and the sides cost $2/ft^2.

a) Express the cost of the box as a function of its length (l) and height (h)

b) Find a relationship between l and h.

c) Express the cost as a function of h only

d) Give the domain of the cost function

e)use a graphing claculator or computer to approximate the dimensions of the box having least cost.

If you do this and show your work i will love you!!!!! Please i really need some help. Its due 2moro and i did it but i think it is wrong!!!!!

A very High Level Math Problem!!!! Please help me out!!!?
Hi,

a) Express the cost of the box as a function of its length (l) and height (h)

Cost = $4/ft²(LW) + $2/ft²((2L + 2W)H)

Cost = $4/ft²(L*4) + $2/ft²((2L + 2*4)H)

Cost = 16L + 2(2HL + 8H)

Cost = 16L + 4HL + 16H

b) Find a relationship between l and h.

Volume = LWH

40 = L(4)H

10 = LH

10

---- = H

..L

c) Express the cost as a function of h only

Cost = 16L + 4HL + 16H

Cost = 16L + 4(10/L)L + 16(10/L)

Cost = 16L + 40 + 160/L

d) Give the domain of the cost function

L %26gt; 0

e)use a graphing calculator or computer to approximate the dimensions of the box having least cost.

Y = 16x + 40 + 160/x

If this is graphed, it has a minimum at (3.162,141.19). this means the minimum cost is when the length is 3.162 feet and the cost of the box is $141.19. The height is 10/L = 10/3.162 = 3.162.

I hope that helps!! :-)
Reply:Okay, what do we know. We know that the width is 4 and the volume is 40, so what do we have left? We want cost right? Well, cost is going to be in terms of square feet, so our answer has to be in square feet. Remember that, if your units end up being wrong, you know you're not doing it right. So, if you know the width, you are going to need some kinda formula right? Don't worry about the math yet, just do this:

How much will the box cost? The total cost is the cost of the base plus the cost of each side.

Now there's something that we can put in a formula!

Total cost = base cost + sides cost

Now, let's just look at the base for now. We know the width is 4, and the length is L, and the base costs $4 per square foot. So...

Base cost = $4 * 4ft * L

Now, there are two sets of "sides" let's say the front and back, and then the other two are "sides". So we'll some equation like this for the front and back. (Remember 4 wide, $2 per sq ft)

Front and Back Cost = 4ft (width) * H * 2 for each side * $2

Two Sides Cost = L * H * 2 (for each side) * $2

Total Sides cost = (4ft * H * 2 * $2) + (L * H * 2 * $2)

And now we add that to the base cost to get total cost as a function of H and L

f(H, L) = ($4 * 4ft * L) + ((4ft * H * 2 * $2) + (L * H * 2 * $2))

f(H,L) = (16L) + ((16H) + (4LH))

f(H,L) = 16L + 16 H + 4LH

(I think this is your "a" question.)

But wait! It's gotta be 40 cubic feet right?!?! Don't worry. So we need some kind of way to make sure it stays that way. We need H to change with L so that it's always 40 cubic feet. So:

40 cubic feet = 4ft * H * L -%26gt; or

10 square feet = H * L or

H = 10 square feet / L and

L = 10 square feet / H

So, there's a relationship between the two (aka, question 'b')

Now, just take our original f(H,L) and drop in our relationship for L= 10/H for each L we see:

f(H,L) = 16L + 16 H + 4LH

f(H) = 16(10/H) + 16H + 4(10/H)(H)

f(H) = 160/H + 16H + 40

Now, we have a formula only in terms of H (aka 'c')

Now, we can't have a box with a height of 0, but we could make this box as tall as we want, as long as H = 10/L. It's just that as the box gets taller, L gets smaller. So really, the possible values for the height of the box (aka the domain of the equation, and the answer to 'd') is anything greater than 0.

As for the last one, just graph it, I can't find my graphing calculator, and that's the easy part. I hope that I explained this well enough for you to follow.

Please can you help with ths math involving vertex form?

For this quadratic equation

a)express the relation in factored form

b)find the coordinates of the vertex

c)express the relation in vertex form

y=4x^2 - 12 + 5

Thanks in advance.

Please can you help with ths math involving vertex form?
Hi,

For y=4x^2 - 12x + 5, it factors into y = (2x - 5)(2x - 1)

That means its x intercepts are the answers to 2x - 5 = 0 and 2x - 1 = 0., wjhich would be x = 5/2 and x = 1/2.

For the vertex of y=4x^2 - 12x + 5, find the axis of symmetry by doing x = -b/(2a). That would be x = -(-12)/(2*4) = 12/8 or 3/2 Note that this is the average of the 2 x intercepts too, showing they are equally spaced to each side. If you plug 3/2 in for x, you can solve for its y value of -4. Your vertex is the point (3/2, -4).

To write y=4x^2 - 12x + 5 in vertex form, first factor a 4 ( the x^2 coefficient) out of both x terms.

y=4(x^2 - 3x.........) + 5 Now complete the square in the parentheses. 1/2 of -3 is -3/2. -3/2 squared is 9/4 so add 9/4 inside the parentheses to complete the square.

y=4(x^2 - 3x.+ 9/4) + 5 To find out how much that changed the equation, you must multiply the 4 out front times the 9/4 to get 9. That means the equation overall is 9 more than it used to be, so to balance that out, you have to subtract 9 out on the end behind the 5. Then combine like terms.

y=4(x^2 - 3x + 9/4) + 5 - 9

y=4(x^2 - 3x + 9/4) - 4

Now factor the parentheses into a binomial squared. It will always start with x, have the same sign as what is in front of the x term, and the number you had earlier before you squared it.

y=4(x - 3/2)^2 - 4

This is vertex form, y = a(x - h)^2 + k, where (h, k) is the vertex. Note it's the same as what we found in part 2.

I hope that helps!! :-)
Reply:a) (2x-5)(2x-1) = y

b) Take the derivative

dy/dx = 8x -12 = 0, set = 0 to find vertex

x = 12/8 = 3/2

c) I do not know what vertex form is, sorry

Vector problem....?

A ship heads in a direction N 25° W. The speed of the ship relative to the water is 50mi/hr. The water is flowing derectly south. It is observed that the true direction of the ship is directly west.

a) Express the velocity of the ship as a vector in componet form.

b) Find the speed of the water.

c) Express the velocity of the water as a vector in componet form.

d) Find the true speed of the ship.

Vector problem....?
It would be nice to include a diagram, but I will try without one, using the component forms of vectors in the following form: %26lt;mcosƏ, msinƏ%26gt;, where m is the magnitude of the vector and Ə is the direction from the positive x-axis. Speed is used to convey magnitude in these applications.

ship's component vector = %26lt;50cos115°, 50 sin 115°%26gt;

current's component vector = %26lt;wcos270°, wsin270°%26gt; = %26lt;0, -w%26gt;, where w is the speed of the water

The actual direction of the ship is the resultant (sum) vector of the above 2 vectors. We know that it's due west, so Ə=180° and its magnitude is the actual speed of the ship (let's call it S) . The sum of the 2 vectors will therefore actually equal the vector %26lt;-S,0%26gt;, where S is the true speed of the ship. As such,

%26lt;50cos115°, 50 sin 115°%26gt; + %26lt;0, -w%26gt; = %26lt;-S,0%26gt;

so S = -50cos115° = 21.2 mph

and W = 50sin 115° = 45.3 mph

Really fast current!!

Reply:What's helpful is to draw a picture. There should be two vectors, one for the speed and direction of the boat, one for the speed and direction of the water. The boat vector, we'll call it B, has a magnitude of 50 and a direction 25 degrees to the left of north (we'll assume north is straight up on the paper). The water vector, we'll call W, is going straight down, and has an unknown magnitude. Both vectors are coming out of a single point, where the boat is. To find B's components, draw a right triangle with B as the hypotenuse. Find the lengths of the two sides, which will be B's two components, one for the x direction, Bx, and one for the y direction, By. Make sure you use the correct angle when the sides, 25 degrees was measured from the y-axis, not the x-axis. A common way to write this in component form is %26lt;Bx i^ + By j^%26gt; (put the carots " ^ " on top of the i and j, instead of next to them i can't get the computer to do that)

Since the boat is not moving North or South, the Wy=By The y-components of each velocity vector cancel each other, thus the boat does not move in the y (N-S) direction. Since W has no x-component (it's not moving East or West) the velocity of the water must equal Wy.

The y component of W is already figured out, that's Wy, and the x component we already know is 0, so you can just write %26lt;-Wy j^%26gt; You put the minus because the water is going south.

The true speed of the ship, since the y components of the two velocity vectors cancel, is the sum of the x components. But since W has no x component, the true speed is just the magnitude of Bx.

I hope this helps!! =)

Chem Help -- Specific Heat Capacity?

Calculate q (in kJ) when 287 g of water is heated from 29.8°C to 87.5°C. The specific heat capacity of water is 4.184 J/g.°C. Express your answer in scientific format: 1.25 x 103 = 1.25E3

Chem Help -- Specific Heat Capacity?
The total heat energy Q = m * Cp * ΔT

Here Q = heat required to raise the temperature from T1 to T2

m = mass of water in kg (287/1000 = 0.287 kg)

Cp = Specific heat of water (4.184 KJ/kg C)

ΔT = Temperature difference (here 87.5 - 29.8)

Substituting

Q = 0.287 * 4.184 * (87.5 - 29.8) = 69.28 KJ (kilojoule) = 0.6928 * 10^2 KJ or 0.6928E2

It can also be written as 6.928 * 10^4 Joule. 6.928 E4 Joule.
Reply:Specific heat capacity formula is q=(mass)(specific heat) (change in temp).

Change in Temperature= 87.5-29.8 = 57.7 deg C

q = (287 g H20)(4.18 J/(g*deg C))(57.7 deg C) = 6.92E4 Joules which equals 6.92E1 kJ.

Hope this helps!

Math question?
a) To prove that a subset of a vector space is a subspace, you need to prove that the subset is closed under vector addition and scalar multiplication. Suppose (a,b,c,d) and (w,x,y,z) are two elements of V. Then d-c=b-a and z-y=x-w. Now (a,b,c,d)+(w,x,y,z)=(a+w,b+x,c+y,d+z). Since z-y=x-w, we can add these terms to the former equation, which gives us d-c+z-y=b-a+x-w, which in turn gives us (d+z)-(c+y)=(b+x)-(a+w). Thus shows that our vector sum must always be in the subset, so V is closed under vector addition. For any scalar k in R, k(a,b,c,d)=(ka,kb,kc,kd), but since we know that d-c=b-a, we can multiply this entire equation by k to get kd-kc=kb-ka. Thus, V is closed under scalar multiplication, and hence is a subspace of R^4.

I would do the other parts too, but I've got to go to class. Maybe I'll edit this answer later.

Maths question indecies? ?

A) express 8^1/2 as a power of 2

B) express √3 as a power of 9

C) express 1/4√2 as a power of 2

THANK YOU

Maths question indecies? ?
A) express 8^1/2 as a power of 2

8^{1/2} = (2^3)^{1/2} = 2^{3/2}

B) express √3 as a power of 9

sqrt(3) = 9^{1/4}

C) express 1/4√2 as a power of 2

1/4√2 = 2^{- 5/2}
Reply:A = 8^1/2 = sqrt8 = sqrt4*sqrt2 = 2*sqrt2 = (2^1)(2^1/2) = 2^3/2.

B. sqrt9 = 3. Therefore sqrt3 = sqrt(sqrt9) = (9^1/2)^1/2 = 9^1/4.

1/4 = 2^-2.

sqrt 2 = 2^1/2.

1/4sqrt2 = 2^-2*2^1/2 = 2^(-2+1/2) = 2^-3/2.

Parts per billion, and part per million question, plz help???

symptoms of mercury poisoning become apparent after a person has accumulated more than 20 mg of mercury in the body

a) express this amount as parts per million for a 60 kg person.

b) express this amount as parts per billion

c) express this amount as mass/mass percent

what are the units for ppm and ppm anyways? plz explain. thanks!

Parts per billion, and part per million question, plz help???
(a)

20 mg / 60 kg

= 20 * 10^(-3) gm / 60 * 10^3 gm

= 0.333 * 10^(- 6)

= 0.333 ppm.

(b)

If you take billion to mean 10^9, then:

0.333 ppm = 333 parts per billion.

Using 10^12 for billion, the answer is 3.33 * 10^5 parts per billion.

(c)

0.333 * 10^(-6)

= 0.333 * 10^4 %

= 3.33 * 10^3 %.

ppm is a description of what the ratio 0.333 represents. There isn't really any unit, unless you call ppm itself the unit. ppm is dimensionless, as it is just the ratio of two numbers.

XCode vs. Visual Studios?

I am a windows user, and I am trying to figure out as much about the mac as possible because I am going to swich soon. Then I thought I will still have to use windows because I am in highschool programming in C++, and there is no alternative for the mac.

But I was wrong, i found xCode while searching on the internet, i have tried searching on the internet about it and it seems to be extremely confusing, now, I program in Visual Studios C++ Express Edition, and looking to tranact to the mac, but I can't seem to find any c++ programs people have made,

Now my question is what does it look like on the mac when you program in c++ and the command prompt?Is there a command prompt?Can you prompt a user to enter something form a console?

for those who have used both, what is your stand on xcode vs visual studios?

My teacher kinda talked about SDK's and i aint familiar with it but i want to know if you can use microft sdk's on the mac?

maybe this is cause i'm new to programin.

thanks anyways.

XCode vs. Visual Studios?
There is a command prompt but it's different. It's a UNIX terminal/shell. You can definitely prompt a user to enter something at the console. There are many ways to program in Mac OS X. The Xcode program is free from Apple and is pretty good. There is also Eclipse which works on both Windows and OS X. You would need to get the C/C++ plugin with it. There are also the standard UNIX text editors such as emacs and vi. To be honest, if you're just starting and you want to have an easy transition, I would suggest that you start using Eclipse now on your Windows machine. Then, when it comes time to switch to your Mac, you won't have as much of a learning curve (i.e. you'll just use Eclipse there, too). You can get Eclipse at:

http://www.eclipse.org

On this page, there should be a "Download Eclipse" button or something along those lines. Then there should be an Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers link.

SDK means Software Development Kit. This is basically a set of libraries/headers for use in your programs. As far as using Microsoft SDKs on a Mac goes...well, I guess it depends on what you want to do. There is mono for the Mac:

http://www.mono-project.com

but I've never actually used it so I don't have an opinion on this one. Is your teacher having you do Windows-specific code? If not, as long as you stick with standard libraries, you should be fine. You won't be able to compile a C++ program on your Mac and give it to him to run on Windows however. You'll need to compile it on a Windows machine.

Mathematics.?
1 + 2/x = 3/2

Multiply both sides of the equation by 2x

2x(1) + 2x(2/x) = 2x(3/2)

2x + 4 = 3x

Transpose 2x

2x + 4 - 2x = 3x - 2x

Collect like terms

4 = x

- - - - - - - -s-
Reply:1a) 1=+2/x=2/3

multiply the equation by 2x:

2x+4=3x

substract 2x from both sides:

4= 3x -2x

therefore x = 4

ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ...

1b)a = square root b+2/c

by squaring both sides:

a^2 = b+2/c

substract 2/c from both sides:

a^2 - 2/c =b

therefore b = a^2 - 2/c

%26gt;1b) Given that a = √b + 2 / c,

express b in terms of a and c.

Make b the subjest of the equation =%26gt; isolate the b term on the RHS by subtracting 2/c from both sides

a = √b + 2 / c

a -2/c = √b

Square both sides

b = (a -2/c)²

= (ac-2)²/c² if you prefer

%26gt;1c) Express the following as a single fraction, in its simplest form

(i) K^2 - k / K^2 - 1

Are 'k' and 'K' supposed to be the same variable or different?

And there are no brackets on anything?

If they are the same:

k² - k/k² - 1 = k² - k/k² - 1

= k² - 1/k - 1

= (k³ - k -1)/k

%26gt;(ii) 1 / x - 3 - 2 / 3 - x

Again you wrote no brackets e.g around the "3 - x", so the answer to what you wrote is...

1/x - 3 - 2/3 - x = 1/x - 11/3 - x

= (1 - 11x/3 - x²)/x

= (3 - 11x - 3x²)/3x

(Take more care with your brackets...)

= k(k-1)/(k-1)(k+1)

= k/(k+1)

.

(ii) 1 / x - 3 - 2 / 3 - x.

= (3-x)/[(x-3)(3-x)] - (2x-6)/[(3-x)(x-3)]

= (3 - x - 2x + 6)/[(3-x)(x-3)]

= (9-3x)/[(3-x)(x-3)]

= 3(3-x)/[(3-x)(x-3)]

= 3/(x-3)

Math gets on my nerves sometimes, help with this problem pls thx?

Okay this might be a easy problem, and maybe i just cant concentrate but i dont get this, its the last question to my math hw here we go....

A farmer can plow a field in d days. It takes his son 4 fewer days to the plow the same field.

a) Express in terms of d the part of the field that the farmer can plow in a day.

b) Express in terms of d the part of the field that the son can plow in a day

c) Express as a fraction in lowest terms the part of the field that the farmer and his son can plow in a day working together.

Those are the 3 questions (a,b,c), a brief explanation of how you arrived at the answer for each would be appreciated, anyways thanks for helping..

Math gets on my nerves sometimes, help with this problem pls thx?
a. The farmer can plow 1/d of the field in one day.

Think of it with numbers. If I can plow the field in 3 days, then I can plow 1/3 of it in a day.

b. The son can plow 1/(d-4) of the farm in a day. Same rationale.

c. Together, they can plow 1/d + 1/(d-4) of the field.

1/d +1/(d-4) = (d-4)/d(d-4) + d/d(d-4)

that's converting the fractions to the common denominator

(2d -4) / (d^2 -4d) is the final answer

your teacher may like 2(d-2) / d(d-4)

a) If the farmer takes 2 days then in one day it would be 1/2 the field, if he takes 3 days then in one day it would be 1/3 so if he takes d days in one day it would be 1/d

b) 1/(d-4) - as above

c) Add these 2 together and you get what is achieved in 2 days - so in one day, it would be half of that
Reply:"Lulu 49" is fine until the last answer...there is no logic in dividing by 2....if dad can do 1/10th and son then 1/6th then adding together and dividing by 2 implies together they do less than the son by himself....hmm...maybe that was Lulu's logic
Reply:There are two possible approaches to solving a homework problems you don't get. One is to look at the examples earlier in the chapter and see if you can find one that resembles it. The other is to look at the problems around it (this works particularly well if the textbook has answers to the odd questions in the back). If you can figure out how to solve a similar problem, you can solve this one too.

Another approach is to throw in a number instead of "d" in order to get a better feel for what the answer should look like. If you use something like 3, which means that it takes the farmer 3 days to plow the entire field, then in 1 day he can plow 1/3 of the field, right?

Math help............. dont understand these questions........?
k 1st question

a recrd store is having a sale during wich all items will be sold at 25% less than their marked price . how much will a CD marked at $16 sell for ?

this is a goodway to lead to the next probs, 25% less is = to 1/4. so the price of the CD is being discounted by 1/4 the new price is then equal to 3/4 (4/4 - 1/4) so the answer would be

16$x3/4

(16/1)x(3/4)=48/4=12/1=12

______________________________________...

k 2nd question part B, the 5000$ he invested grew 13% so he has gained 650$, the new value of the stock is the original amount he paid plus the growth (5000+650)= 5650$ is the value of the stock

______________________________________...

a.40%=40/100=4/10=2/5

b. 55%=55/100=11/20

c. 62.5%= 62.5/100=625/1000= 5/8

______________________________________...

a. 3/5=6/10=60/100=60%

b. 29/40=72.5% (use a calculator and divide 29 by 40 then multiply by 100 to get the percent)

c.5/4= 125/100=125%
Reply:B---eric invested $5000 dollars in the stock market . the value of his stock increased by 13%.

since eric Earned/ Increased by 13% then you add $650.00 to $5000
Reply:A.

If the marked price is $16, then the sales price = 25% less so

sale price = (1-25/100)*16 = (3/4)*16 = $12

B.

New value is 5000 + (13/100)*5000 = (1+13/100)*5000 = 1.13*5000 = $5650

(in other words just add on the amount earned - $650 - to the original investment)

C.

They are already expressed as fractions with 100 as a denominator - perhaps the question is not copied right?

Perhaps they want them to be reduced so

a. 2/5

b. 11/20

c. 31/50

D.

Just multiply by a 100, so

a. (3/5)*100 = 60%

b. (29/40)*100 = 29*100/40 = 29*5/2 = 29*5/2 = 72.5%

c. (5/4)*100 = 500/4 = 500/4 = 125%
Reply:D take the denominator and divide it into 100 then take that answer and multiply the top figure by it in example

3/5 100 divided by 5 equals 20 therefore 20 multiplied by 3 equals 60 so the answer is 60%

hope that this helps
Reply:A..$16 X 25% (16 X .25) = 4

16-4=$12

Answer is $12

B....the new value of the stock would be $5650 Just added the interest to the old investment value.

C.....they are already in fraction form

D...60%

72.5%

125%

Just divide the numerator by the denominator
Reply:A)16/1.25= 12.8 $12.80

B)5000x1.13 = 5650

C)40/100= 2/5, 55/100 stays the same, 62.5/100=125/200

D)3/5=60%

29/40 =72.5%

5/4=125%
Reply:A- all you have to do is multiply .25 by 16.

B-???

C-what percent??

D-60%, 58%, 120%
Reply:A. 25% of $16 is $4. 25% off of the $16 is figured as $16 - $4 is $12.

B. You have the amount earned. Add this to the original value of the stock to get the present value of the stock. $5000 + $650 = $5650.

C. 40/100 = 40%

55/100 = 55%

62.5/100 = 62.5%

D. 3/5 -- 3 divided by 5 = .60, or 60%

29/40 -- 29 divided by 40 = .725, or 72.5%.

5/4 -- 5 divided by 4 = 1.25, or 125%
Reply:You can get the answer two differrent ways.

First sub tract 25% fro 100% getting 75%, then multiply .75 times $16 getting $12. Second way is to multiply 25% time 16 getting .25 times 16 = 4, and then subtract $4 from $16 getting $12

The new valuue of the stock is equal to the original value plus the increase in value which is simply $5000 + $650 = $5650

40/100 % = 0.4/100

55/100 % = .55/100

62.5/100% = 0.625/100

3/5 = 60/100 = 60%

29/40 = 72.5/100 =72.5%

5/4 = 1.25 = 125%
Reply:A. 16 - .25 = 12 dollars

B. 5000 x .13 = 650 therefore stock value is 5000 + 650

= 5650 dollars

C. 40/100 = 40% or .4 (divide 100 into 40)

55/100 = 55% or .55

62.5/100 = 62.5% or .625

D. 3/5 = 3 divided by 5 = 60%

29/40 = 72,5%

5/4 = 125%

in the last one you for example you could say

4 = 100%

5 = x %

then x % = 5 x 100 divided by 4 = 125 %

Can Microsoft Office be downloaded for free?

I'm not looking for an answer but to give response to a now closed question.

This is a limited time offer, Microsoft is now offering the Office 2007 Beta to be downloaded free from its site. And for students, there Visual Basic Express and C# Express %26amp; C++ Express is available for free download till November. Get in on this before the offer ends. After this time period you'll have to pay for the downloads. You download before the that period the software is yours to keep for absolutely free, check it out:

Can Microsoft Office be downloaded for free?
Thank you very much to the reminding us of OpenOffice, I neglected to mention it. It includes OpenOffice Base %26amp; Impress, (alternatives to access and PowerPoint respectively) which you do not get in the Microsoft Office Package.

Thats was for those of you who insist on using Microsoft products.

I would like to also refer to sourceforge.net which would give "Dia", the opensource alternative to "Visio" and "Imendio Planner for Windows", the opensource alternative to Ms Project.

Please not that "sourceforge.net" offers source code downloads so be sure that you chosse the ".exe" to use the end product.

And in response to this "When you join thier subscriptions for MSDN, like 3 grand a year last I looked, you can download alot for 'free'!" It actually is free. I am a current VB student and I am taking advantage of this offer, 'cause you don't get much free from Microsoft. It has a saved me a bundle. I have both VB Express and Visual Web Developer Express and they're running perfectly. There is no $3000.00 charge. So do it before November and you're good to go.
Reply:Adding to your posting: Oracle Express, MS SQL Express, and, you know, even Open Office which is not Microsoft but is also a good option and uses and saves files in MS Office formats...
Reply:Yea its a limited time offer. I've used Microsoft Beta products and after a few months they just stop working and throw an error saying the trial period is ended. It is however pretty cool way to learn the software and test stuff on.
Reply:is this just an add?
Reply:Microsoft opened Beta years ago to the puiblic thank goodness. They used to send fbi to your house before that when the testing was done i have friends it happened with.

The link above gives the download but also explains that the beta has an expiry date of Feb 1st and will have a limited function after that.

You can download Open Office which looks and feels very much like the Microsoft version, but is entirely free and available for commercial use as well.

The amount A in an account after t years from an initial principle P invested at an annual rate r compounded c

The amount A in an account after t years from an initial principle P invested at an annual rate r compounded continuously is given by A = Pe^rt where r is expressed as a decimal. Solve this formula for t in terms of A, P, and r.

a. t = ln(AP/r)

b. t = ln(A/rP)

c. t =r ln(A/P)

d. t=1/r ln(A/P)

The amount A in an account after t years from an initial principle P invested at an annual rate r compounded c
A = Pe^rt ---------- divide both sides by P to get

A/P = e^rt --------- take the natural log of both sides to get

ln (A/P) = ln(e^rt) --------- simplify right side to get

ln (A/P) = rt*ln(e) ---------simpllify right side further to get

ln (A/P) = rt ------- divide both sides by r to get

(1/r)ln (A/P) = t

The answer is D. . .
Reply:A = Pe^(rt)

A/P (growth as a percentage of principle) = e^(rt)

ln(A/P) = rt

[ ln(A/P)]/r = t

The "rule of 72" is relevant here. If A/P is 2, doubling your investment, 72/r (r as a percent without a decimal) gives you roughly the time required. For example, at 8% you double your investment in 72/8 = 9 years. Business types use 72 because it's close to ln(2) = 0.6931 and has lots of nice factors like 6, 4, 3, and so on.

c)How far have you traveled after t hours? i.e. write a linear function that expresses the distance traveled, d, as a function of time, t.

) It is approximately 300 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to St. Louis, Missouri. Allowing for various traffic c
Your main equation is

d = rt

That is, distance = rate times time.

What is your speed?

I'll assume it is 65 (because that is the speed limit on the interstate)

d = 65t

a) After 3 hours (that means t=3), you would have traveled

d = 65(3) = 195 miles

b) After 4 hours (that means t=4), you would have traveled

d = 65(4) = 260 miles

c) d = 65t

sitting around and waiting for his reply and it will bother me, but instead...b/c i haven't been initiating contact, he has started like...taking more initiative and maybe....expressing some worry that he thinks i don't miss him or something, and i kind of like it that he is concerned that i don't miss him....is it bad for me to feel this way?

its not bad, or at least its not wrong of you.. maybe it will show him that he needs to step up a little bit.. and maybe you need to give him some more space? (like you are now). its good for him to let you know he cares by being worried (as long as its not exessive).. he cares thats all that matters. but dont drag it out too much, dont torture him haha
Reply:oh, stop playing the game...........why not just talk to him and tell him you miss him......express to him how you feel.

Guys like that and he will like you more for it!
Reply:No, its a good test for your boyfriend to show how much you do mean to him. Even if he calls just to check in once, it shows he cares. You can always find time to make a 2 minute phone call. No excuses.
Reply:Haha cute. There is nothing wrong with feeling that way! He is thinking thing the same thing over there going "hey.. why doesn't she miss me and text me a lot?" which is the same as you liking that he is concerned. You just like that he cares. :) Everyones like that.
Reply:u shouldn't call him but tx him and say ilove u and miss u. don't wait for the "i love u too " or anything like that just let him know. and no it's not good to let him or u think that it's fine.... i mean if u love him he will understand. trust me .... talking from experience.
Reply:No thats good .. he should feel that way it tells you he cares!
Reply:No, it's natural for you to want to make sure you're wanted as much as you want him.

You've been doing the work... feeling bad... now it's his time to respond to you when you talk to him, and call you first.
Reply:no. it's normal. he should take some initiative. just be honest with him. tell him how you feel. explain that it's not that you don't miss him, but it makes you really happy when he is the one to contact you more often.

Prove that the general sln of the D.E (x+2y-4)dx-(2x+y-5)dy=0 can be expressed in the form (x-y-1)^3=c(x+y-3)?

plz quickly i need help

Prove that the general sln of the D.E (x+2y-4)dx-(2x+y-5)dy=0 can be expressed in the form (x-y-1)^3=c(x+y-3)?
(x+2y-4)dx-(2x+y-5)dy=0

dy/dx=(x+2y-4)/(2x+y-5)

x=x1+h

y=y1+k

dy/dx=dy1/dx1=(x1+2y1+h+2k-4)/

/(2x1+y1+2h+k-5)

h+2k-4=0

2h+k-5=0 h=2; k=1

x=x1+2; x1=x-2

y=y1+1 y1=y-1

dy1/dx1=(x1+2y1)/(2x1+y1)=

y1/x1=u; y1=u*x1

dy1/dx1=du/dx1*x1+u=

=(x1+2u*x1)/(2x1+u*x1)=

=(2u+1)/(u+2);

du/dx1*x1=(2u+1)/(u+2)-u=

=(1-u^2)/(u+2)

int (u+2)/(1-u^2)*du=int dx1/x1

(u+2)/(1-u^2)=a/(1-u)+b/(1+u); a=3/2; b=1/2

1/2*[3*int du/(1-u)+

+int du/(1+u)]=ln(x1)+lnc

-3*ln|u-1|+ln|1+u|=

=2*ln(cx1)

(1+u)/(1-u)^3=C*(x1)^2; x1=x-2; y1=y-1; u=y1/x1;

1+((y1/x1)=C(x1)^2*(1-y1/x1)^3

x1+y1=C(x1-y1)^3; x1=x-2; y1=y-1

x-2+y-1=C(x-2-y+1)^3

(x-y-1)^3=C(x+y-3)

Is there a descrete uncountable subset of C[0,1]-->R with its usual metric?

OK, so C[0,1] is seperable. But this seems to clash with the following observation. Please tell me where my reasoning went wrong.

For every a∈[0,1] a can be expressed uniquely as an infinite expension mod 2. That is a = (a_1)/2 + (a_2)/2^2 + ... +(a_n)/2^n... where each a_i is either 0 or 1. Define f_a(x) = 0 whenever x = 0 or x = 1/2 + 1/2^2 + ... +1/2^n, for some n and a_n = 0. Similarly, define f_a(x) = 1 whenever x = 1/2 + 1/2^2 + ... +1/2^n, for some n and a_n = 1. For all other x, 1/2 + ... +1/2^n %26lt; x %26lt; 1/2 + ... +1/2^n + 1/2^(n+1) for some n≥0. Define f_a(x) to be the point on the line, connecting f_a(1/2 + ... +(1/2^n ) and f_a(1/2 + ... +(1/2^n +1/2^(n+1)).

For example, if a = 0.01... then f_a(0) = 0, f(1/2) = 0, and f(1/2 + 1/4) = 1. , for , 0%26lt;x%26lt;1/2 f_a(x) = 0 and for 1/2%26lt;x%26lt;1/2 +1/4 = 3/4 f_a(x) = (4)(x -1/2).

It seems that f_a is continuous with domain [0,1] and that d(f_a, f_b) = 1 with a not equal to b. Hence the set of all f_a is a descrete uncountable set.

Is there a descrete uncountable subset of C[0,1]--%26gt;R with its usual metric?
What about f_a when a=2/3? You see at once that f_(2/3) cannot be continuous at 1.

I also would like to point out to the other answerers that a separable metric space does not admit an uncountable discrete subset. Since C[0,1] with the uniform norm is a metric space, the existence of a discrete uncountable set would indeed be quite remarkable, and when I say remarkable I intend PLAINLY FALSE.

Finally, may I correct the spelling of you, dear asker. Englishmen write separable, discrete, expansion, NOT seperable, descrete, expension.
Reply:I'm no Englishman either (Englishman singular, Englishmen plural). Report It

Reply:Note that f_a is continuous if and only if "a" has finite expansion, so you have only countably many of such functions. On the other hand, if you apply your construction to C[0,1) (i.e. 1 excluded) you actually find an uncountable discrete subset: C[0,1) is not separable. Report It

Reply:The best answer I can come up with is that it isn't true in general that discrete, uncountable sets aren't separable.

There are obscure reference papers to this on the internet. See, for example, reference 8 at:

Reply:If I may expand a bit on GI's remarks, the definition of a separable space is that it contains a countable dense subset. If a space is not separable, this means it does not contain a countable dense subset. Equivalently, every dense subset is uncountable. This is *not* logically equivalent to saying there is an uncountable nowhere dense subset.

Now, it may actually be true that a space with an uncountable nowhere dense subset is not separable-- I don't really know one way or the other, because no immediate counterexample springs to mind. I'm just saying that it is not an immediate logical consequence of the definition, and so, if true, it would require proof.
